Understanding private foundations and their origins, structure, governance, how they determine giving, best practices and emerging issues in region, Identifying and engaging funders, Principles of grant stewardship and reporting.

Instructors:

Mason Rummel joined the James Graham Brown Foundation in 1989 and was elected as its Executive Director in 1998, president in 2010 and its CEO in 2017. Prior to moving to Louisville in 1988, she was a political appointee for the Reagan Administration from 1983 to 1988 where she served as a public affairs specialist for domestic policy at the White House Office of Management and Budget. Mason is a Member, Board of Directors of the Council on Foundations and Co-chair, Public Policy Committee (Washington, DC); Member, Alliance for Charitable Reform, the public policy and strategy arm of the Philanthropy Roundtable (Washington, DC); Co-chair of the Public Policy and Membership Committees of the Southeastern Council of Foundations (Atlanta, GA); Kentucky Nonprofit Network, Public Policy Committee; and Sweet Briar College. Locally, Mason serves as a Board member for: The Center for Nonprofit Excellence; Greater Louisville Project; Evolve502; Episcopal Church Home Foundation; and Kentucky Derby Museum. Mason holds a Masters of Arts in Philanthropic Studies at Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. She received her B.A. in English at Sweet Briar College, VA. Married with 3 grown children.

Angie McDonald Evans was promoted to Vice President, Corporate Responsibility and Community Affairs in March 2018, after joining LG&E and KU Energy LLC in January 2015 as Manager, Corporate Responsibility. Evans is responsible for leading community engagement and investments, key corporate responsibility programs and grant-making processes. For over twenty-five years, Angie has held leadership positions in both the public and private sectors. Prior to joining the LG&E and KU Energy, Angie was Vice President of Community Leadership at the Community Foundation of Louisville. Before that post, she served as Director of Planned Giving at the University of Louisville after eight years in the financial industry as a Vice President and Private Banker at National City — now PNC. Angie’s career began in the public sector, where she worked as Special Assistant to Louisville mayor David L. Armstrong and as the Director of Affirmative Action.
