Event Details
Join us as we learn how to build effective partnerships with private foundations. The objective of this course is to give participants useful information and practical guidance on how you can anticipate and create long-term relationships with private foundations both locally and nationally.
In this session, we will also:
- Discuss the many types of private foundations and their origins, structure, and governance.
- How foundations determine giving, best practices and emerging issues in the region.
- Identifying and engaging funders.
- Principles of grant stewardship and reporting.
Lunch will be provided.
Instructors:
Mason Rummel joined the James Graham Brown Foundation in 1989 and was elected as its Executive Director in 1998, president in 2010 and its CEO in 2017. Prior to moving to Louisville in 1988, she was a political appointee for the Reagan Administration from 1983 to 1988 where she served as a public affairs specialist for domestic policy at the White House Office of Management and Budget. Mason is a Member, Board of Directors of the Council on Foundations and Co-chair, Public Policy Committee (Washington, DC); Member, Alliance for Charitable Reform, the public policy and strategy arm of the Philanthropy Roundtable (Washington, DC); Co-chair of the Public Policy and Membership Committees of the Southeastern Council of Foundations (Atlanta, GA); Kentucky Nonprofit Network, Public Policy Committee; and Sweet Briar College. Locally, Mason serves as a Board member for: The Center for Nonprofit Excellence; Greater Louisville Project; Evolve502; Episcopal Church Home Foundation; and Kentucky Derby Museum. Mason holds a Masters of Arts in Philanthropic Studies at Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. She received her B.A. in English at Sweet Briar College, VA. Married with 3 grown children.
Ashley Parrott joined the James Graham Brown Foundation in 2021 as a Program Officer. Her grantmaking portfolio includes Community and Economic Prosperity and Quality of Life. Ashley has many years of experience in government, community, and public relations. Formerly serving as policy director to Mayor Greg Fischer, she managed policy initiatives, grants, and nonprofit and philanthropic partnerships for the Louisville Metro Government. She also led fundraising strategies for education, health, economic development, public safety, and equity initiatives. Previously, Ashley served as legislative director at the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet, deputy policy director to Governor Steve Beshear, and has worked with other state and local government and policy organizations in Kentucky, Ohio, and Washington, D.C. Ashley is active in her community and is chair of the Board of Directors for the Center for Nonprofit Excellence, commissioner on the Martin Luther King Jr. State Commission, and co-founder of the New Leaders Council Kentucky Chapter. She was also selected for the 2016 Louisville Business First 40 Under 40 Award and Leadership Louisville's Bingham Fellows program. Ashley received her MPA from the University of Louisville and her BA from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.
