As fundraisers and executive directors, we know that fundraising is as demanding as it is rewarding, and finding excellent staff is essential to the success of any nonprofit. And yet, the IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy recently reported that the average tenure for Development Directors is eighteen months. And if one adds the turnover cost to the organization of training a new employee, the effect can be alarming. How can we ever expect to serve our mission and engage and retain passionate donors if we cannot do a better job at recruiting and retaining great staff?

This course is divided into two parts. The first examines recruiting top-tier fundraising staff to propel your nonprofit organization toward long-term success. Our instructors are seasoned development professionals who have hired and supervised fundraising teams in major nonprofits in Louisville. They will explore strategic recruitment practices, guiding participants through the process of identifying the right talent that aligns with the organization's values and objectives. We will explain how to create a hiring process that not only ensures buy-in from new hires but also engages the peers, board members, and donors in supporting development staff in their critical first year.

The second half will focus on creating a culture that makes the development team want to stay. We will examine how leadership can create a lasting and impactful culture for its team. Discussions will focus on practical ideas to retain strong talent and create a workplace culture where a team can thrive.

Please join us as we all learn how to create and retain a fundraising workforce that not only believes in your mission but actively contributes to its realization.

This course is created for:

  • Executive Directors and CEOs who oversee hiring and motivating Directors of Development;
  • Directors of Development and VP's who must find ways to recruit and retain team members
